Public Engagement
Birmingham Science City is committed to working with schools and the wider community to:
- Encourage greater understanding of how science can help us lead healthier and greener lifestyles
- Help recruit the next generation of scientists in the West Midlands region.
Our Public Engagement partner is Thinktank, Birmingham science museum, which in 2009-10 reached 262,000 children and adults either visiting the museum or taking part in an outreach activity in a school or a community venue. The Public Engagement programme showcases some of the exciting developments taking place within Birmingham Science City, and catalyses, stimulates and supports collaborative activity that promotes science and technology to the wider public and to young people especially.
Our current activities include:
- Encouraging Science City researchers to become STEM Ambassadors in our schools.
- Supporting school and community events that showcase Birmingham’s Science activities. For example, we supported the How Science Works event which engages school students with career opportunities in science.
- Support for 39 primary schools across the region working towards the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM). The Science Learning Centre at Keele University administers PSQM in the West Midlands. For more information on PSQM, please click here
