University of Birmingham celebrates its open-door to business

On Wednesday 23rd May Vice Chancellor Professor David Eastwood hosted an evening reception at his residence to celebrate the University of Birmingham’s long history of successful business partnerships and reaffirm the University’s role in supporting business growth in the region.

Attended by over 120 senior business executives and entrepreneurial academics, the evening provided an informal networking event to make new introductions, build on existing partnerships and highlight the successes of working together.

Guests were encouraged to view the exhibits on show demonstrating the University’s translational research strengths. Research themes included transport technologies, medicine, sustainable energy and food security.

The University of Birmingham is opening its doors to business, embracing its role in supporting the regional and national economy. Having established offices in China and India, the University also continues to enhance its reputation as an engaged University internationally, working with global industry players.

Professor David Eastwood, Vice-Chancellor and Principal said:

I am proud of the University of Birmingham’s record of success in collaborating with business, which is built on our research excellence and innovation in key areas for business. The University of Birmingham has a vital role to play in supporting business growth and encouraging innovation. I hope today’s event has stimulated fresh discussions, opened doors for new partnerships and strengthened existing links.

Among the breadth of research on display a formula racing car designed and built by a team of engineering undergraduates from the School of Mechanical Engineering proved extremely popular. Sponsored by a number of industry partners that engage with the University on a variety of engineering challenges, UBRacing will be entering its 15th year in the International Formula SAE event which promotes careers and excellence in engineering.

The University was the first Midlands University to be part of the Easy Access Innovation Partnership, which promotes new ways of transferring intellectual property (IP) to industry. Delegates from Alta Innovations, the University’s technology transfer company attended the evening to discuss this scheme and other opportunities to tap into the University’s intellectual assets.
