Second Life
At its most basic level Second Life is an online meeting place. At a more advanced level it is a place for serious research and real life business.
Many US, and now UK, universities have a presence in this online world and with over 10 million registered users there is bound to be someone else out there with similar interests, whether that be fashion design or particle physics.Opportunities to use the new graphics, broadband and collaboration technologies for business communication, marketing, product development and networking are just beginning to take off.
This project, run by the Serious Games Institute at Coventry University, assisted business in understanding and exploiting these opportunities and created a virtual Science Park for West Midlands businesses.
The Serious Virtual World’s conference which was funded through Science City was held three years ago in Coventry. This was the first European conference on the professional applications of virtual worlds and many of the participants did so virtually through an online recreation of the Serious Games Institute. The project set up a Business Island which provides virtual business support services to companies interested in exploring the potential of immersive collaborative environments.
The Business Island has hosted many virtual seminars and conferences and has been hired out for external events hosted by organisations from Israel, USA and Canada.
