LUCID Wireless Applications

h2.The LUCID project helped to demonstrate the possibilities for context and location-aware applications using the Free-Information Zone provided by Birmingham City Council.

These applications will be able to send information on public transport, attractions, shops and services to citizens and visitors in the test zone in the centre of Birmingham based on their interests and needs and where they are.

The activities aim to make Birmingham the UK’s first Wireless City and create the ‘buzz’ of a region defining itself by technology. The project is being delivered by Birmingham City University and the University of Wolverhampton.

The LUCID Birmingham City University developed 8 proof of concept applications demonstrating the use of mobile Location and Context Specific Information.

Case Study: The QR Code Treasure Hunt

An application was developed that enabled users to interact with an innovative online/offline game using the camera on their mobile phone and a series of QR Codes.

The game took the form of a Treasure Hunt, QR code clues were hidden in through the Digbeth area of Birmingham City Centre and using camera on their mobile phones players took photos of the clues. The application developed as part of the LUCID project decoded the codes into a textual clue which led players to the next clue. Each QR code discovered also gave the player some game points, once all the clues had been found the player would have achieved the maximum number of game points and completed the game.

This project was developed in conjunction with Tribly Multimedia who adapted the application for use within their school customer base.

Bluetooth Broadcast Application

An application was developed that enabled timed delivery of specific Bluetooth messages to coincide with crowd and audience activities. This application was developed in collaboration with 383 Project , Crosby Homes and Urban Pie .

A trial was run at Urban on National Pie Day, messages were sent out via Bluetooth, offering an offer on pies a certain points in the day including a lunchtime offer between 12:00-14:00 and a Bake Sale after 18:00.
383 Project have continued to use this application for other clients of theirs.
