Intelligent Zero Emission Vehicles
Transport is an industrial strength in the West Midlands but also creates a growing problem of congestion and pollution.
This project based at the University of Birmingham, and including Coventry University, looked at the low carbon and IT technologies which can reduce emissions, planned routes to avoid congestion and enhanced the user-appeal of electric vehicles through integrating communications systems.
The project worked with leading companies in the region, including Microcab, Shoothill, Tempus Computers, BT and RDM Automotive and also with Birmingham City Council to compare performance of electric and diesel delivery vehicles – identifying any benefits to switching to electric vehicles for council vehicle fleets.
The Hydrogen Barge was launched in 2007, which become the basis for satellite navigation work with RDM and for design and ergonomics research with Professor Andrée Woodcock at Coventry University.
The UK’s first hydrogen filling station was also set up on the Birmingham Campus in 2009.
