Dragon Runner, QinetiQ
QinetiQ
Malvern-based QinetiQ have developed a highly intuitive robot, named Dragon Runner, which is being used by a number of regiments to detect landmines and other explosive remnants. The robot has helped significantly in Afghanistan.
The Dragon Runner can be worn as a backpack, and is capable of moving at high speeds, picking up 10lb objects and sending video footage back to soldiers using four on-board cameras. Britain’s ultra high-tech device will eventually replace the Wheelbarrow bomb disposal device, which has been in use since in the 1970s.
Malvern-based Qinetiq, have a long history of security innovations including the invention of RADAR and LCD displays and were pioneers in the development of thermal imagery. More recently, Qinetiq have developed:
- a real-time screening solution which is able to detect hidden weapons and explosives and made critical improvements in human factors to improve operator attention during high volume rare event screening such as airport x ray security scanners
- The X-Net vehicle arresting system
GPS/GPRS tracking systems, the Tarsier Runway-scanning device which identifies debris - The world’s leading MMW detectors for body borne threats, deployed to guard the 2008 Presidential elections, and now heading into wider deployment.
- The Domain Based Security (DBSy®) process for information security which forms the basis of the HMG risk assessment method that is mandated by the Cabinet Office Security Policy Framework.
- Quantum cryptography.
